Trump faces fresh Iran war scrutiny after Democrats seize Congress
Mettis Global • • 1 min read

Democrats have taken control of both chambers of the US Congress, a result that could intensify scrutiny of President Donald Trump’s handling of conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, Mettis Global reported. The shift gives Democrats greater scope to examine the administration, shape federal spending and contest policy decisions, while Trump is still expected to retain wide latitude in foreign affairs.
The report says Democrats could challenge US military involvement in Iran through congressional votes or by seeking to restrict funding, although ending the operation could face a presidential veto. Chatham House’s Laurel Rapp linked voter concern over inflation and rising fuel and food costs to the Iran conflict, which began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes. Berenberg economist Holger Schmieding expects further bombing before a possible agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by 2027.
At a glance
- Democrats gained control of the Senate and House of Representatives.
- Congressional votes and spending powers could be used to challenge US involvement in Iran.
