Mohmand Dam cost rises 115% to Rs666 billion amid delays, rupee depreciation

Mohmand Dam’s estimated price has climbed to Rs666 billion from the Rs310 billion approved in 2018, an increase of 115%, according to Profit by Pakistan Today. Wapda sent the revised estimate to the Central Development Working Party this week, but the committee postponed its review because of limited time.
The Planning Commission documents put physical completion at about 57% in September 2026, with Rs275 billion spent. Wapda attributed 51% of the Rs356 billion increase to rupee-dollar movements, while officials sought contractual details before accepting those adjustments; the commission also called for an independent assessment and an updated financing plan. The project, delayed by exchange-rate changes, design revisions, security issues and 2022 flood damage, is expected to store 1.29 million acre-feet of water and produce 2.9 billion units of electricity each year.
